An example- Maybe I am an idiot who is swayed by all the postive press- But the new S60 (And more so the even better looking V.60) has been getting glowing reviews and I want to consider the S60/v60 as my next vehicle (used of course) but I am skeptical of the Turbo + supercharged engine and the reliability of Volvo overall. But I’ve never driven one let alone owned one because I live in the Volvo desert of South Central US.

What new or used car would you buy today regardless of the budget if it had the excellent reliability of a mid 2000s Toyota Camry? Or even 50% more reliable than it is now?

there are lots of cars in that category for me!
The VW Golf wagon is one
The 2-door Land Rover Freelander (looks so awesome in yellow), and the Jaguar X-Type wagon too
And of course, this was also the downfall of the C230 coupe. Otherwise, it would be like an
honorary 240SX successor (cute lil RWD hatch thing for
drifting)

The problem is I’m terrified of many unreliable cars, but wholeheartedly plan on owning them anyways.
Discovery, 90's Alfa's, 90's Japanese halo cars, 90's-mid 2000's Volvos, E46 M3.... I could go on for days.

That is so easy for me, RX8, drove a couple, loved them, and I drove a lot of different cars looking for my current daily driver. WRX, S2000, Z3, G35 , RSX, E46, C230 Coupe . Maybe I should have pulled the trigger before doing more research or maybe not... How many other cars in the last 20 years have had a factory engine replacement program out of warranty.

An E46 M3 convertible with the SMG. I almost bought one last month but I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger without knowing how many thousands the transmission was going to end up costing in the future.

If you think the SMG is the thing you have to worry about on an E46 M3...I’m sorry to report that the SMG transmission
isn’t really any less durable than the manual it’s based on. No, what you have to do is buy one that has already had the VANOS fix and the subframe reinforced or at least checked recently and has never been driven through a puddle at speed because a surprising amount of sensitive electronics
are located
in places that get splashed.
And you absolutely should buy one because they are the most fun you can have with your clothes on, including in the wet (RIP DSC computers). I miss driving
mine all the time
but I don’t miss maintaining it.

I owned an E46 M3 for the better part of five years. I now own a fairly rare special edition of the C63 AMG. I ain’t scared of a maintenance bill, but the M-car is the one I wouldn’t own again without a warranty (I did not have a warranty when I owned it). That said, I loved that car and would gladly own one again if reliability weren’t a concern or if the known major issues had already been addressed. So, basically I’d be the guy who bought it from me...

Anything in the last 6 years by Volvo, Land Rover (especially a Velar, man that thing is handsome)
, Aston Martin (Vantage V12 or a DBS... Maybe a Virage), maybe even an
E63 AMG wagon... I know Volvo and Land Rover have come a long way, but modern electronics get rushed through to production making initial purchasers the beta testers, for better or for worse.

I’m with you. I am actually currently in a drawn out negotiation with the local Volvo dealership regarding a 2015 V60. They think it’s worth a lot and the rest of the world and I think they are wrong. Maybe it will work out and I can go from hot hatch to frumpy dad wagon!

The only option ever, the Ferrari 355.
Although my good friend has a rough 348 approaching 260,000 miles.

It’s not how many you can do before a CE L that matters, it's how many you can do with a CEL. And for me, that's every single one.

Holy hell, why hasn’t there been a story on this car??? Connect your friend with one o f the FP editors ASAP.

I did one at 201,000 miles about 2 years ago for a Ferrari site but it never got published/authorized/saw the light of day, not sure what happened to it. I will look at some old hard drives and see if it is on one of those.
Next time I get it for an extended service I will do another comprehensive write up/story on it.

Especially since David Tracy just started his “ High-Mileage Heroes” series, this car would absolutely be a perfect candidate. I can believe he and probably all the editors would like to get an article out on that 348.
Hell, I’m dying to read about it already!
